Mac OS X windows have three colored buttons in the top left corner - close, minimize and expand. Clicking close or minimize does exactly what you expect. However, clicking expand is a bit of a gamble. Depending on which app you're running, expand window does whatever the hell it wants to.
In iCal, it expands the window to fill the screen.
In iTunes, it switches the window to compact mode.
In Safari, it resizes the window to fit the content it's displaying (ish).
Make up your mind, Apple!
